EARTH, Ocean, Air, belovèd brotherhood!

      If our great Mother has imbued my soul

      With aught of natural piety to feel

      Your love, and recompense the boon with mine;

      If dewy morn, and odorous noon, and even,

      With sunset and its gorgeous ministers,
7
      And solemn midnight's tingling silentness;
8
      If Autumn's hollow sighs in the sere wood,
9
      And Winter robing with pure snow and crowns
10
      Of starry ice the gray grass and bare boughs; 10
11
      If Spring's voluptuous pantings when she breathes
12
      Her first sweet kisses,--have been dear to me;
13
      If no bright bird, insect, or gentle beast
14
      I consciously have injured, but still loved
15
      And cherished these my kindred; then forgive
16
      This boast, belovèd brethren, and withdraw
17
      No portion of your wonted favor now!
